Cargo is carried on every flight operated by Solomon Airlines, both internationally and domestically. In excess of 700 tonnes of cargo is carried internationally per annum. Many commodities are imported into the Solomon Islands by air. These generally include fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh eggs, day old chicks, courier products, mail, urgent breakdown parts, general supplies and personal effects.
Main commodities exported from the Solomon Islands include chilled and frozen seafood products such as
tuna, lobster tails and prawns. Live products include live tropicals, exotic
birds and reptiles exported under government approval. These products are sent to markets in the USA, Australia, SE Asia and some neighbouring Pacific countries.
Solomon Airlines' cargo terminal is located adjacent to the International Passenger Terminal at Henderson Field. It has a cargo handling area of approximately 270 sq mtrs and office areas of 51 sq mtrs. Solomon Islands Customs Officers utilize office and inspection areas within the complex.
Cargo arrives at Henderson Field to be belly loaded into the Boeing 737. It is transferred onto aircraft barrows then towed directly inside the Cargo Terminal where cargo check-in procedures are undertaken. Importers commence Customs clearances and formalities the next business day. Pre-clearance of urgent consignments can be facilitated with prior arrangement with Solomon Airlines and Customs. The Customs Bonded Warehouse of Solomon Airlines is one of the few maintained in the country. Agency representation, import break-bulk and export consolidation services are readily provided to the forwarding community together with excess baggage services to the travelling public. Domestic capacity is also well utilised internally within the Solomons. Local surface shipping services do not always accommodate the needs of the regional community who then rely on Solomon Airlines to get their small and urgent consignments between the many domestic locations scattered throughout the Provinces. In excess of 150 tonnes of domestic cargo is carried annually. All staff are fully trained in export and import procedures and hold current IATA Dangerous Goods Accreditation.
